No Stigma Warrior Initiative Coalition

Breaking stigma through education, prevention, advocacy, and compassionate care.

What is the No Stigma Initiative?

The No Stigma Warrior Initiative Coalition brings together community partners to address the misuse of prescribed opioids and other substances within the sickle cell community while promoting understanding, empathy, and competent care.
Through education, prevention, advocacy, and collaboration, the coalition is working to create a community where people are better informed, stigma is reduced, and individuals and families can access support without judgment.

Our Mission

To reduce the misuse of prescribed opioids and other substances within the sickle cell community by promoting understanding, empathy, and competent care, breaking down stigma through education, prevention, and advocacy.

Our Vision

A community educated against the misuse of opioids and other substances.

We envision a community where prevention and education go hand in hand with empathy, informed care, and respect for people living with sickle cell disease.

About the Initiative

The No Stigma Warrior Initiative Coalition is supported through the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program, a federal initiative of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) managed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The DFC program supports community coalitions in identifying and responding to substance-use challenges within their communities. Its focus is on prevention, community collaboration, and creating healthier environments where young people and families can thrive.

Through this initiative, the No Stigma Warrior Coalition will bring that prevention-focused approach into the sickle cell community, with particular attention to education, stigma, advocacy, and responsible approaches to substance misuse.

Why Teen Support Matters

Being a teen with sickle cell comes with unique challenges. You're figuring out who you are, building independence, and planning your future, all while managing a serious health condition. You don't have to do it alone.

You're Figuring Out Who You Are

Being a teen is already complicated. Add sickle cell to the mix, and it can feel overwhelming. You deserve a space where you can be yourself without judgment.

Transition to Adult Care is Scary

Moving from pediatric to adult healthcare is a huge change. You need guidance on how to advocate for yourself and manage your health independently.

Your Peers Don't Always Get It

Friends at school might not understand why you miss class or can't do certain things. Connecting with other young warriors who truly get it makes all the difference.

You Have Big Dreams

Sickle cell doesn't define you. You have goals for college, careers, and your future. We help you build the skills and confidence to chase those dreams.

Why No Stigma?

Preventing substance misuse is not only about sharing information. It also requires understanding, empathy, and competent care.

The No Stigma Warrior Initiative recognizes the importance of addressing substance misuse without creating additional stigma for people living with sickle cell disease.

Our work is centered on helping the community better understand these issues, encouraging informed conversations, supporting prevention, and advocating for compassionate approaches that respect the experiences of sickle cell warriors and their families.

Our Focus

Education

Provide clear, accessible information that helps individuals, families, young people, and community members better understand substance misuse, prevention, and the role everyone can play in building a healthier community.

Prevention

Support community-based efforts designed to prevent the misuse of prescribed opioids and other substances before problems develop.

Advocacy

Promote understanding, empathy, and competent care while challenging stigma and misconceptions that can affect members of the sickle cell community.

Community Partnership

Bring together organizations, professionals, community members, and other partners to share knowledge, strengthen prevention efforts, and develop solutions that reflect the needs of the community.

Building Prevention Through Community

The Drug-Free Communities program is built around a simple idea: local communities are best positioned to understand their own challenges and create solutions that respond to them.

Through the No Stigma Warrior Initiative Coalition, we will work alongside community partners to strengthen prevention efforts, engage the community, share reliable information, and support initiatives that contribute to safer, healthier communities.

As the initiative develops, we will continue sharing updates, educational resources, community activities, and opportunities to participate.
